Heishi Beads
Heishi beads have a rich history rooted in indigenous cultures of the Americas, particularly among Native American tribes such as the Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico and the Zuni in Arizona. The word "heishi" comes from the Santo Domingo word for shell. Originally, heishi beads were made from shells, specifically clam shells, which were ground into flat discs and drilled for stringing.
The technique of making heishi beads involves handcrafting small, uniform beads from natural materials like shells, stones, or metals. Each bead is individually cut, shaped, and polished before being strung into necklaces or other jewelry items.
Heishi beads were traditionally used for ceremonial purposes, as well as for trade and personal adornment. Over time, the use of heishi beads expanded beyond shells to include materials like turquoise, coral, and other gemstones. T

I've used a large floral clasp (metal). The seed beads are Japanese Miyuko beads in a bright green to add a pop of colour to this necklace.
